Larry gave us this review on 06/12/06. Approx Dates of Stay: June 9-11, 2006. What did you camp in? Tent
Overall Campground Rating: very good.
What stood out? Located along the edges of the CT River for easy fishing and canoe/kayak launching withing the park.
Owners and Staff: The park rangers were very helpful and friendly. We had a group of cub scouts and the rangers went out of their way to help us. Especially since it rained all weekend.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: It's a state park. The campground has leanto's, group areas, cabin areas and other locations wither water and electric.
Overall Site Quality: fair-average
Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water Campsite Descriptions: wooded, large and spacious, close to the road, sandy bottom, grassy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, highway noise, group camping area. The group site we were in was very close the the main road and the sound of cars zooming along Route 5 while sleeping can be unerving somethimes.
Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers, Just a few and they were cleand and friendly.
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. Coin-metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? no. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: One mens and one womens shower for the whole campground. It was a good distance to the shower from our campsites. The lines could be long waiting for the one shower. More showers are definetly needed, especially when a group or groups are camping there....The bathrooms were cleaned 3 times per day and kept clean and stocked.
Activities and Amenities
river, fishing, boating, boat rentals, pets allowed, Pavillion with fireplace next to the rangers quarters. The ranger kept the fire going for us which was nice. It made s'mores on Saturday night in the pouring rain enjoyable as it was dry!
What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, nature trails. Within 30 minutes is the VINS (Vermont Institute of Natural Studies at Quechee), The Montshire Museum (excellent), North Star Canoe Rentals down the CT River, Mt. Ascutney access road and lots of hiking area.
Last comments: Our group consented that we'd go back again. Preferrably when no rain was scheduled so that we might partake in our original plans to visit the VINS and paddle down a stretch of the CT River. Yes we'll return!
