Approx Dates of Stay: Aug 13-17 2003. Overall Campground Rating: not good. What stood out? The bad: [1] this campground is at the end of the approach lane for a busy runway at Portland's International Airport. From sun-up until 11PM expect very close and EXTREMELY loud jet landings and takeoffs right over your heads. You cannot, I repeat CANNOT carry on normal conversation when they fly over. Expect to yell a lot or learn sign language! [2] Sites are extremely open and close and right on the access roads. My fiancee was miserable, as all night the campground's reps drove very loud gas-powered golf carts past the sites. It sounded like they were driving through your head. We needed earplugs (!) to get a good night's sleep to battle the airplane and golf cart noise. [3] Sodium-vapor street lights are present and are waaaay too bright. We used eye patches like they do on airplanes to make it dark enough to sleep. [4] The women's room was gross. Of the 3 stalls in the one closest to us, one of the toilets was full of human waste, and one was clogged. [5] The sites closest to the entrance have to deal with the noise generated by a fee-based beach area (across a shallow 5-acre manmade pond from the campsites) that is open to the public. The noise generated by the kids from the beach was significant. We noticed this when it rained and the campsite finally became quiet because they (hundreds) all left. [6] They rent out large picnic areas to groups (as most places do, I know) but they are WAY too close to the seasonal and transient sites. I'm sorry, but when I camp I do not want to listen to "Achy Breaky Heart," the "Macarena" and "Shout" blaring from a DJ booth (at a campground!) 100 feet from my site for an entire day. This drove us to leave a day early. Moreover, these patrons used the comfort stations that the paying campers did with disgusting results. [7] A lot of the facilities were closed. The camp store was closed because "the guy that runs it broke his leg." Evidently, running a cash register is beyond the talents of the rest of the staff. It was closed the length of our 4-day stay. As was the arcade. Did not see the snack bar open either. [8] The sites are very close together with absolutely no ground cover or trees separating ANY of them. Also, many of the full-hookup sites are completely in the open. We could have taken a running jump from our tent to the bed in our neighbors'! We estimated about 5 cars within 20 feet of us at all times within our site. Oh, and did I mention that those cars were not ours?
The good: [1] Men's room was really clean and not crowded. It was cleaned religiously daily and smelled it. [2] They provide dish sinks outside the rest rooms to allow you to wash camp dishes without messing up your site. Nice touch. [3] Water in the pond (they call it a lake) was clean and supposedly chlorinated (though it was stocked with trout?) [4] Sites were cleaned when campers left before new arrivals came [5] Trash barrels were plentiful, covered, and emptied daily. [6] The family movie area had what appeared to be a very nice large-screen TV for watching movies; the movies were also current. They also had hayrides for kids that seemed well-attended (though they did have one during a terrible thunderstorm!). Owners and Staff: Seemingly friendly; however, they drove the golf carts around ALL NIGHT interrupting tenting! Camp landscaping and surroundings: Pine trees with all lower branches removed - dirt and pine needle floor - NO redeeming natural beauty whatsoever - mostly seasonal (permanent) sites that were extremely dirty - no privacy (natural or manmade) at all between sites.
Overall Site Quality: not good. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, sewer, cable. Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, somewhat small, close to the road, grassy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, highway noise. Seasonal Campers and Campsites: cluttered, too many seasonal sites.
Clean restrooms and showers? no. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: moldy shower curtains.
Activities and Amenities: lake, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, recreation hall, tv or movies, playground, kids planned activities, camp store, snack bar, pets allowed, laundry room, dumping station, very small playground. What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, ocean or lake.
