Lake Isabella, CA -

John Wohlfeil gave us this review on 12/07/07. Dates of Stay: 12/2007. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Tent

Overall Campground Rating: excellent.

What stood out? Clean, well kept, very private and empty the first weekend in December, 2007

Camp landscaping and surroundings: Good trees, fun rocks throughout, a winding path of paved road walks you through the site. Not the "line 'em up" kind of RV sites you may have seen. A short walk up form the lake. With treeless patches perfect for telescope viewing at night.

Overall Site Quality: excellent

Good sites: #1, they also have great handicapped spaces Bad sites:

Campsite Descriptions: wooded, semi-private, close to the road, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area.

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. Coin-metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: The handicapped restroom has free showers and electricity. The other restrooms have coin-op showers. Good tip from the Ranger.

Activities and Amenities

lake, fishing, boating, boat rentals, playground,

What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, nature trails.

Last comments: Being amateur astronomers we like to take our telescopes out, away from civilization, and that usually means camping. And it lends itself to a few great stories along the way. We made plans to visit Joshua Tree, CA the first weekend in December, 2007 - before it gets too cold. And Joshua Tree has dark skies so it is a great place to take along the telescopes. Camp all day, astronomy all night, sleep when you get home - ha ha ha. The week leading up to our trip - the forecast in Joshua Tree called for rain, so we made some adjustments to our plan and we chased the clear skies up to Lake Isabella, CA late Thursday night. After two good nights in Lake Isabella, the weather changed and Joshua Tree had clear skies, and the clouds were headed our way.

So, we packed up camp, and headed 4+ hours to Joshua to finish off the trip. Sure it was cold, with Lake Isabella hitting 31º and Joshua Tree touching down to 27º, but if you go prepared, the cold is nothing to worry about.

Two campsites, two different outdoor experiences, in one weekend - what a blast! We've also made a campfire cookout video that's worth seeing on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvdKrzvu5vw Happy Camping!
