Hillman, Michigan - 800-729-9375

D. Ann Brock gave us this review on 08/06/08. Dates of Stay: May/2008. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Motor Home - Size of Camping Unit: 37'

Overall Campground Rating: excellent.

What stood out? This is a great place to stay in NE Michigan. The RV park is small, clean, and well taken care of. No showerhouse, but that's not a problem for most of us RVers. We're big golfers and they have a beautiful course - with very reasonable rates. The Clubhouse is just pitching wedge away from the RV park, so we could easily walk back and forth. Best of all, the Carriage Ride to see the Elk and have dinner at the remote cabin was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We saw elk in velvet and new babies with their moms. The food was spectacular - exceeded only by the service and personal attention.

Owners and Staff: This resort is owner-operated so the entire family is involved. We found the service in all areas (RV resort, golf course, elk ride) to be first-class all the way.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: The resort is quiet, peaceful, and beautifully landscaped. Although the sites are asphalt, flower bed abound and there are trees everywhere. Lots of grass on spacious sites.

Overall Site Quality: excellent

Good sites: All 23 sites in the park offer views of either the golf course or open meadows - with views to the west of spectacular sunsets. Bad sites: Avoid sites #1 and #23 - only because they require very tight turning radius to enter/exit. On the other hand, those two sites are bordered by the woods so they're very private.

Campsite hookups: electric, water, sewer, cable, wifi Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, large and spacious, picnic table, fire ring; Level asphalt sites that are huge. Wrought-iron patio furniture. Several sewer connections at each site make it easy to locate your rig so it's convenient to the patio/furniture. Lots of grass (no dust or rocks)

Cell Phone Service: Excellent AT&T cell signal both in the park and surrounding areas.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: No permanent campers permitted in this park.

Comments on restrooms and showers: You must be self-contained as this campground has no showerhouse/restroom.

Activities and Amenities

pond, river, fishing, theme weekends, AM coffee, snack bar, pets allowed; They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the Clubhouse Grill so I hardly had to cook while we were there. The Pro Shop is small, but well-stocked. I wouldn't recommend this campground for families with children. There's very little for kids to do unless they golf.

What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, nature trails. Hillman has an IGA store, several gas stations, several "Dollar" stores, numerous restaurants, laundry, post office, a bank and a credit union. It's 20 minutes west of Alpena (on Lake Huron) and 50 minutes east of Gaylord (on I-75) so major shopping (e.g., Walmart Supercenter) is nearby.

Last comments: I realize this campground is a bit out of the area you cover, but believe me it's well worth the trip. The elk-viewing carriage ride makes it unique. Prices are considerably lower than on the Lake Michigan side of the state - as is traffic and population density. Alot of the land in the area is owned by the state, so it's very scenic.
