Dennis gave us this review 08/05/01:

Overall Rating for facility and campsites: Good. Knowledgeable and helpful staff and pleasant surroundings. My initial impression upon seeing the site #36 assigned, was not a good one. While the site itself was good, the opening I had to back our pop-up through was only 2 feet wider than the camper. Other sites didn't appear to be quite so bad though. With the exception of the group camping area all of the sites are across a quiet dirt road from the beach area. Our site itself was within a 3-5 minute walk, however some of the primitive sites are quite a distance away. The sites themselves were semi-private, level and appeared to be well-maintained. A word of warning, the campground does not allow you to reserve certain sites.

The "restrooms" in the camping area were nothing more than outhouses, but were clean. The metered showers and "real" restrooms are by the beach area and camp store. There did seem to be quite a few of the outhouses in the camping area so you were never far from one. Our site was right across from one and no one complained about any smell. There was a horseshoe pit right next to it that our kids spent a lot of time playing at. While it didn't happen to us, I could easily see a line of people waiting to use the showers at some point.

Swanzey Lake is a beautiful small lake. You are charged a mooring fee for any boats, even a canoe that was to kept out of the water. I found this fee rankled me considering that the sites are a bit of a walk from the lake, and they do not differentiate between a motor or sailboat that needs to be kept in the water and a canoe that can be left on land till used. Other than the beach and lake itself, there wasn't much else to do, they advertise a recreation hall that we didn't see.

The city of Keene NH is close by and that was the reason we chose to try this campground, I work in Keene and made it easy to camp and work.

While my review itself may sound negative, it is not meant to be. I would not recommend this campground as a destination, however if you want to visit the Monadnock Region, very close to Keene, NH and all Keene has to offer, this is a campground worth going to. We will go again when my work schedule doesn't allow further trips and the rest of the family has time.
