Lake George, NY
Bob C gave us this review on 02/19/07. Dates of Stay: August 2006. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Tent
Overall Campground Rating: very good.
What stood out? It's an island - how cool is that? Though you share it with several other camp sites. Boat docks.
Owners and Staff: It is run by the NYS Dept Environmental Conservation. You check in at their island, then continue to your island. I am not aware that they ever came to our island to check on us or others.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: Rough. Some sites have platforms. Others are packed soil with a lot of roots. No grass. - So be prepared. Tables and decent fire pits.
Site Quality:
Good sites: We stayed at Vicars Island this year. We had sites 5 and 6. I would have preferred most any of the other sites. Bad sites: 5 and 6 beacause of their smaller size.
Campsite hookups: primitive tent. Campsite Descriptions: wooded, private, picnic table, fire ring, It's an island with a dock. Boat rental place was about 15 min ride. You can park your car at the boat rental place. Even though it was high season, the island was nearly vacant and only two or three other sites wee being used. Very private. It is really roughing it.
Very few campers on the island. Of about 11 sites only three were occupied.
Clean restrooms and showers? no. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: No restrooms or showers. An outhouse only. Be prepared! I heard you can find showers in Bolton's Landing about 25 min boat ride.
Activities and Amenities
lake, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, docks or moorings, Boating is the big attraction: tubing, skiing, fishing. There are no services on the islands. But you can take your boat to a lot of places. There is an expsnsive convenience store about 10 mins away by boat.
What is nearby? ocean or lake, THe town of Bolton's Landing is closest whish has shops and restaurants. Town of Lake George is about 40 mins away where it has all sorts of tourist traps.
Last comments: Our second year on an island. We loved it, but we're going to try the Hearthstone Point this year. We won't need to rent a boat for the entire stay and maybe it will be a little less work.
