Overall Campground Rating: excellent.
What stood out? One of the cleanest, quietest, and best run campgrounds we've ever stayed at - and this is a state park. Grounds are immaculate, and it's a peaceful, beautiful refuge by the West River.
Owners and Staff: Management and staff have always been wonderful, helpful and friendly; long time ranger couple has apparently retired, but new staff is friendly and capable as ever.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: Despite being right off Rte.30 and the village center of Jamaica, this campground/state park has the feel of being in the rural wilderness. Set at the base of a heavily forested mountain, and by the side of the West River (one has to cross an old metal one lane bridge to get to the campground), one feels like it's another world.
Overall Site Quality: excellent
Good/Bad sites: All sites are clean, well maintained, and spacious, some more private than others. Site #17,19, 21 all are great. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, semi-private, large and spacious, sandy bottom, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. All sites are immaculately prepared, cleaned, and raked for each new visitor. No two are the same and many have unique features.
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. Coin-metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: Always clean and well maintained, plenty of hot water.
Activities and Amenities
river, swimming, fishing, playground, kids planned activities, pets allowed, dumping station, Three different hiking trails, one particularly rewarding (and moderately difficult), to the breathtaking Hamilton Falls - it's worth the hike!
What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, nature trails. Plenty to do in the area, and the Village of Jamaica is a ten minute walk, and many other chaming towns (and covered bridges) are nearby.
Last comments: Been camping at this campground for many years, and it never disappoints. One of THE best in the country.
