Stacey gave us this review on 06/28/06. Approx Dates of Stay: 6/18/06-6/24/06. What did you camp in? Pop-up Trailer
Overall Campground Rating: fair-average.
What stood out? Peaceful quiet location and very nice attentive staff!
Owners and Staff: The owners are very friendly as are the staff members. All were very helpful and accommodating. It's their early season so the Rec Hall was only open on the weekends but the camp manager made a point of coming out to our site and letting us know to go to the office any time the kids wanted to buy candy, ice cream, etc or rent pedal carts and he would have someone open up for them. I thought that was very nice.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: Camp Waubeeka is in the middle of a farming community in the little hamlet of Copake just west of the Berkshires. The campground is clean and neat. Mostly wooded. 2 ponds one for swimming and the other for fishing (catch and release).
Overall Site Quality: fair-average
Good/Bad sites: We were at site I-17 which is small and surrounded by other sites with no barriers natural or otherwise. Campsite hookups: electric, water, sewer, cable, Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, somewhat small, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. Gravel bottom sites except for the safari field (grass) and the tenting sites (pine needle). Separate tenting areas dispersed throughout. These sites appear to be the most private but no elec, sewer, etc. Community water spigots for tenting areas.
Seasonal Campers and Campsites: friendly campers; The seasonals we did meet were very nice. I walked around the campround and some sites were very neat and some were neglected.
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: The bathrooms were the worst thing about the campground. I was so happy that we now have a rig with a toilet in it. The toilet buildings are beyond old and most do not have lights and there were so many bugs. The women's showers did have lights and the water was hot and plentiful. DH says the men's showers have plenty of hot water but no privacy and no lights. One room with a shower tree! In the owner's defense the electrical was upgraded this year and next year they are slated for all new bathroom buildings.
Activities and Amenities
pond, swimming, fishing, recreation hall, video games, pool table, playground, theme weekends, kids planned activities, camp store, ice cream, AM coffee, snack bar, pets allowed, security gate. The camp store was tiny, a small room in the back of the rec hall. The playground equipment was very old and probably unsafe by today's standards. When's the last time you saw a merry-go-round at a playground? All the swings had been taken down. I was told the chains had rusted out and they were unsafe. No shade at the playground. My kids complained about the vegetation in the swimming pond.
What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores. The IGA is about 4 miles away but closes early. The diner in Hillsdale has a very nice breakfast.
Last comments: This was a trip we won so I felt I really couldn't complain since we weren't paying for it. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I did meet the owners when they came out to our site to congratulate us for winning the trip and to let us know about bad weather that was coming in. They are making improvements all the time and this is the main reason we will go back!
