Web site: Camp Taylor Campground

Columbia, NJ - 1-800-545-9662

libraryowl gave us this review on 07/10/08. Dates of Stay: 7/2008. Will You Return? No. What did you camp in? Pop-up Trailer - Size of Camping Unit: 23' open

Overall Campground Rating: not good.

What stood out? Good - Wolf Watch program. Bad - bathrooms, overall campground conditions

Owners and Staff: Pleasant, but with extremely long list of rules that are enforced to the letter. Usually this is a good thing, but in this case it is extreme.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: Fully wooded. Several different areas, each with different "personality." Overall dated, run-down look with rusted barrels for recycling, metal trash cans, and rules/regulations signage everywhere.

Overall Site Quality: fair-average

Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, wifi in lounge (did not use) Campsite Descriptions: wooded, somewhat small, picnic table, fire ring, Our site, #66, was hand-selected for us by the owner (we reserved early and most sites were available). It had a brook running just behind it, which was nice, but was small with no privacy. The toilet for this section of the campground was a single port-a-potty.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: There are seasonal sites but we did not see this area.

Clean restrooms and showers? no. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. Coin-metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? no. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: The only toilet within short walking distance of our site (#66) was a port-a-potty. Flush toilets/showers were about 10 min. walk up hill. These were very dated, never clean. There were quite a few private shower rooms but all had "closed for renovation" signs.

Activities and Amenities

pond, swimming, boat rentals, recreation hall, video games, camp store, The main feature of this campground is its affiliation with a wolf preserve. "Wolf watch" programs depart from the campground twice daily to the on-site preserve ($15/adult, $7/child). The program is excellent. The handler is very knowledgeable and informative and clearly loves the wolves (and vice versa). Other amenities are not as advertised. The "2 acre lake" for swimming/boating is more of a dirty-looking pond. The "beach" is overgrown with grass. There are a couple of worn rowboats for rent. There is a little bridge/deck that would be nice for fishing (esp. for children), but fishing is prohibited.

What is nearby? This is a rural area with scattered homes. Delaware Water Gap is nearby. See campground web site for local attractions.

Last comments: The reviews for this cg are mostly good, so we must be missing something. Maybe other areas of the cg are better than the water/electric loop where we stayed. We checked out a day early and no one asked us why or offered a refund. We were so turned off by the two pages of rules and regs and threats of fines that we received at check-in, and the rusty barrels everywhere, and the bathroom situation.
