Approx Dates of Stay: July 4th weekend, Aug and Sept weekends . Overall Campground Rating: excellent. What stood out? Good: Everything! It's extremely clean and spacious. The lake is beautiful! Bad: ???? Nothing! Owners and Staff: The owners, Michael, Maria, Elaine, and Manny are attentive, friendly, and gracious. You are greeted with open arms and welcomed into the "family" for as long as you are there. They take the time to learn your name. We have never been mistreated in any way by them. They are fair in their dealings with everyone! The activities director, Stevie (Scuba Steve) is the biggest asset! He's absolutely fantastic with the kids. Kids of all ages adore him and have soooo much respect for him. They would never think of disappointing him. He's very fair with them and is always encouraging. He teaches them sportsmanship, demands respect to parents, insists on good manners but does all this lovingly. He's an amazing person! He has the magic touch with kids. Camp landscaping and surroundings: The sites are wooded and level. The ones along the lake are the best! Some sites are open (Safari Field). Most of the sites have E&W... some also have sewer. The wilderness sites have water only. All of the sites I have seen are beautiful and large. Trees usually separate you from your neighbors. The roads throughout the campground are NOT paved (which suits me). The campstore is well stocked with everything you could think of from beer to lighbulbs. Fresh baked bread and pies sold daily. Free complimentary newspaper (Portland Press Herald). Used books for a $1.00 if you left your favorite book at home. Also sell fire wood, propane and have air stations to blow up mattresses and water toys. The campground also has a laundromat!
Overall Site Quality: excellent. Good/Bad site #'s: The "W" sites ("wilderness") dont' work for me because my popup doesn't fit. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, sewer, Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, semi-private, large and spacious, close to the road, sandy bottom, grassy bottom, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. I prefer the "far side" of the lake. I have B-22 every year... the only thing that would make THAT side of the lake better is if the sites over there had power! BUT... the sites on that side do not have neighbors across the road (a plus) and it's a dead end road so you dont' get thru-traffic. Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers,
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: HOT,hot water. FREE showers open 24 hours and there are plenty of them. I have never had to wait more than three minutes for a shower.
Activities and Amenities: pond, lake, swimming, fishing, boat rentals, recreation hall, video games, pool table, live entertainment, bingo, tv or movies, playground, theme weekends, kids planned activities, camp store, ice cream, AM coffee, pets allowed, laundry room, dumping station, security gate. The lake/pond is stocked once a month with rainbow trout. Great fishing. The swimming area of the lake is clean and has two "docks" for sunning or playing. Swimming not supervised by a lifeguard. The beach is combed every morning. Brand new, HUGE, and modern playground. Activities for all ages from 8 AM-10PM. Activities include things like a family movie, make your own sundae, tie-dying shirts, make your own taco, kayak races, hoola hoop contests, kool-aide chugs, dances, scavenger hunts, sand sculpture contests, WET hay rides (what a blast!!! The ENTIRE campground gets in on it!), hayless hayrides... You have to experience this! What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, nature trails. If you leave the campground and venture to "town", there is plenty to do in Gorham, Portland or into the mountains to other direction. But, with all there is to do at Acres of Wildlife, why leave?! Last comments: Been going there for 5 years. It gets better as they add amenities. Customer service never wavers. I like that I can reserve my site for the following year if I do it by Thursday. I have yet to find a campground that compares to AofW! We will continue to go back several times a year for as long as Acres continues as it has. We wish them many, many years of continuing success!
