Sturbridge, MA -
JP gave us this review on 05/19/09. Dates of Stay: May 2009. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Tent
What stood out? Beautiful setting alongside a pond, however we found the highway noise on our site somewhat distracting at night, as the I90 passes by just south of the park. Grounds are generous and well kept and seem best for tent camping, as there are no hook-ups and some steep inclines.
Owners and Staff: Staff is hired by the State Park Service, they are as friendly to you as you are to them.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: Campgroud is ideal for tent camping, as RV access might be difficult on many sites. Some of the access roads seemed to require an SUV. Sites seem large enough for most and are very generously spaced apart. Very green and lush setting, really feels like you are in nature. The campground itself is part of a larger state park. Nice hiking trail within the park, but you will hear the highway on some sections.
Good sites: The sites close to the lake have a nice view, but unfortunately they are also the closest to the highway. Some sites are behind a hill and seem more quiet, near a stream - but they are further away from the pond and don't have much of a view. Bad sites:
Campsite hookups: primitive tent, water, Campsite Descriptions: wooded, private, sandy bottom, picnic table, fire ring, highway noise, Some sites can be difficult to access. All sites are well laid out and have some perks and some drawbacks, but overall are quite nice.
Cell Phone Service: AT&T cellular service is available
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? no. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: The showers are adequate, nothing fancy but also not horrible. You get what you pay for, actually perhaps a little bit more. Keep in mind that your judgement of how clean things are will largely depend on who was using the facilities before you.
pond, no pets
What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, nature trails. Walmart nearby, with some of the "usual suspects" surrounding it. Old Sturbridge Village is a nearby attraction, a re-created early settlers village.
