Running Bear Campground (Campground Review)

Posted on September 08, 2008 - Vermont, Central Vermont

Web site: Running Bear Campground

Ascutney, VT - 802-674-6417

Larry gave us this review on 09/08/08. Dates of Stay: August 29 - Sept 1, 2008. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Pop-up Trailer - Size of Camping Unit: 16 feet extended

Overall Campground Rating: very good.

What stood out? Large clean sites. Everyone was very friendly. Highway noise. We were there during Labor Day weekend, so the campers were a bit rowdy and noisy, well past quiet hours during 2 of the 3 nights we were there.

Owners and Staff: The staff was excellent as usual. This was our first time camping w/o the scouts and with my family. They treated us as well as they treated my cub and boy scouts in the past.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: The campground is on a hill. Each time I stay here there is more landscaping at the entry area. The rest of the campground is well taken care of.

Overall Site Quality: very good

Good sites: All look to be good. Bad sites: The sites in the field are a bit of a walk to the rest rooms. And there is no shade out there.

Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, sewer, wifi honey wagon service offered Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, semi-private, large and spacious, close to the road, sandy bottom, grassy bottom, picnic table, fire ring, highway noise, group camping area.

Cell Phone Service: Excellent cell phone service with verizon Wireless. We drove up Mt. Ascutney and could spot the cell towers standing way above the tree line.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers,

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: A 2nd bath house would be very welcome. The mens room stalls need some sort of lock for privacy. The shower stalls need two or more pair of hooks.

Activities and Amenities

pool, swimming, recreation hall, live entertainment, bingo, playground, camp store, ice cream, AM coffee, pets allowed, dumping station, The CT River is 5 minutes away. Quechee Gorge is 25 miles away as is LL Bean in Lebanon, NH. Plenty of hiking, kayaking/canoeing and other activigties and places to explore within 30 to 60 minutes of the campground. The next street over from the campground entrance is teh access road to Mt. Ascutney (2800 feet). A drive or hike up and tremendous view.

What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, amusements, nature trails. Besides my comments above, there are lots and lots of lakes, hiking trails and places to explore within 30 minutes of Running Bear campground.

Last comments: We will return, but probably not over a holliday weekend again. The quiet hours of 10pm to 8am just didn't happen. Lots of very loud people until 11:45pm on 2 of the 3 nights we were there. But the rest of our experience was great and the owners are super friendly and responsive to our complaints on both nights.
