That's Camping's review for August, 2005 and UPDATED for 2006 Approx Dates of Stay: August 2005 for 5 nights. August 2006 for 4 nights
Overall Campground Rating: very good.
What stood out? Extremely large sites! Quiet peaceful campground. Not a place for those that need constant activities. We camped for 5 nights, and by Tuesday, we were basically alone on our huge site by the river! Everyone else had gone home! It was a peaceful stay! Our only complaint was that the bugs were torturous, but that seems to be the case all over New England this year due to the rainy spring. I have never seen a worse year for mosquitoes and other flying bugs! (2006 update: the bugs were not too bad in the daylight hours, but at night they were active.
Owners and Staff: Very nice, helpful. Good people that care about their campground and their visitors.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: Most transient sites are open and grassy. They keep the campground clean and maintained, but it isn't a glamorous RV resort. Just a nice campground. There are train tracks very close by and yes, the train does blow its whistle, and it is loud, but we didn't hear the whistle at night (we were told the train doesn't run at night.) The earliest we heard the whistle was 7:30am so it wasn't an inconvenience to us.
Overall Site Quality: very good
Good/Bad sites: Wow, we have never seen such large sites! They recently redesigned their site structure to combine two sites into one. I didn't measure our site, but it was more than enough for us. The river sites are the best. A few favorites were #s 70, 67, 66, and 65. #80 was also nice, but it wasn't directly on the water. There are only a few transient sites in the wooded area and there is a group area. Lots of campers with fishing boats come here. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water. Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, semi-private, large and spacious, grassy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, highway noise, group camping area. Highway noise from road, along with railroad train whistles (see my comments above) but basically the campground was peaceful. They keep strict rules about vehicle speed, pets and quiet hour.
Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, cluttered, friendly campers; Some season campsites were a bit cluttered, but you
can tell the seasonals take pride in their sites; they were cluttered but neat! ![]()
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? no. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: They have two bathhouses, and a few scattered port-a-potties, but if you don't want to use those portable potties, the walk is a bit long if you aren't camping in a trailer.
Activities and Amenities
pool, river, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, docks or moorings, recreation hall, live entertainment, playground, kids planned activities, camp store, ice cream, AM coffee, pets allowed, laundry room, dumping station, very small campstore, clean pool, weekend entertainment and activities. Wireless Internet access is a little sketchy. It depends on where you are in the campground. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. But that is true for almost all public wifi connections. River leads to the Androscoggin Lake which is a beautiful lake. Great fishing!
What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, ocean or lake, nature trails. Augusta along with a couple of other towns are closeby.
Last comments: If you like to boat or fish, it is a great place to camp. If you want a relaxing peaceful stay, this is the place for you. If you require a full featured resort experience, then you will be bored here. We will probably return next year. We enjoyed ourselves here.
