Larry gave us this review on 08/24/09. Dates of Stay: August 15-23, 2009. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Pop-up Trailer - Size of Camping Unit: 16

Overall Campground Rating: very good.

What stood out? It's located along the Shcroon River at a hair pin curve in the river. A fishermans delight, plus swimming, tubing, kayaking from your campsite. A small and friendly campground.

Owners and Staff: The owners were very friendly and chatty in a good way. During our 8 day stay, we seemed to be plagued by loud neighbors and the owners quieted them down right away.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: The campground is small, the lawns are taken care of (cut once per week). Everything was neat and orderly.

Overall Site Quality: excellent

Good sites: All looked good. Most are along the river, some are not. Bad sites: I didn't see any bad sites during our time there.

Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, sewer, cable, No Wifi or internet at all Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, large and spacious, sandy bottom, grassy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. Sites were generous in size on a nice lawn for most. Some with pine needle bottoms. The only negative was no wifi or wired internet on site. You had to go off site for access which is very inconvenient! The closes free site is a few miles away. There is a McDonalds next door, but for $3/2hrs, $80/mo - That's very unreasonable! The campground should add at least access in their rec room.

Cell Phone Service: Excellent Verizon wireless cell phone and data service on my Blackberry.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers, Seasonals were friendly and neat. We spoke to a few and felt right at home wih them.

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: Two bath houses. One had problems due to water table levels and was closed the 2nd day of our stay. The main bath house was a 150-200 yard walk from our campsite. So that meant only 2 showers and 2 stalls (mens room) for the whole campground. Waits were frequent. But the later you took your shower, the better the chance of not waiting. But hot water was plentiful at all times.

Activities and Amenities

pool, river, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, recreation hall, video games, pool table, playground, pets allowed, dumping station; The only items available to purchase were ice and propane. No store of any type on premises. It was a 5 mile drive to local hardware/sportsman/grocery stores for any supplies. The Ding Dong cart came around on weekends only. Creameries were about 5 miles away also. But McDonalds was right next door.

What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, amusements, nature trails. Nearby is within 5 miles! Lake George is 5 miles away. Fort Ticonderoga is 30 miles away. The new and excellent Adirondack Museum is 50 miles away. Six Flags Great Escape is about 20 miles away. Lots of beachs, boating and fun on Lake George. Lots of shopping and activities in Lake George Village within 5 miles or so.

Last comments: This campground is very warm and cozy. It is VERY tent friendly as well as big rigs. But many tents and smaller campers along the river where we were. In my opionion, if they added Wifi or internet access and updated or built new bath houses they would get a "excellent" rating from me even w/o a camp store. But the wifi/internet access is really needed. It was inconvenient for us and very inconvenient for the seasonals. Overall, we all liked it, even my 14 yr old and his friend, So we'll return in the future!

  1. A last comment I forgot to make was that for the $44 per night there should be some sort of wifi/internet available.

  2. Since I posted this original review, something else has happened that we attribute to this campground. When we were there, one of the bathhouses was closed (after we used it) because of sewage backup into it….Less than a week after we returned home, I developed what looked like a rash or spider bite but actually turned out to be MRSA. After going thru questioning by my doctor, he thinks I caught it at the campground. Specifically in that closed bath house and thru a cut on my foot.

Since my MRSA experience was not fun as it included minor surgery and 2 trips to the ER and a reduced immune system (for a while anyways), I decided to add this comment to my review.

Btw, I am doing fine, but being very cautious on what I touch as I try to stay healthy while my system very slowly returns to normal. I do not wish this on anyone, it’s nasty!

Happy Holidays all and I can’t wait for April and my camping season (2010) to start again!

  3. I feel horrible for you. I am so sorry that you were so sick.

It goes to show you that you have to be so careful where ever you go.

But it looks like the campground did the responsible thing when they closed the bathhouse after they found the problem. It’s too bad that it wasn’t before you used it.

I am hoping they thoroughly cleaned the facility after everything went back to normal.

Problems like this can happen anywhere, so it’s definitely something to be aware of.

Again, I am so sorry for your troubles, and I hope you have a great Christmas and your new year is much healthier!
