Approx Dates of Stay: almost every year. Overall Campground Rating: excellent. Well kept grounds. A great place to go and get away from it all. Quiet hours are strictly enforced ...that includes talking loud enough for neighbors to hear, but that makes it a great place to relax. No power boats on the lake make it very pleasant to canoe, row, or sail. Fishing is good as well. There are kid activities near the beach where they can make all kinds of things. Nice hiking...either just around the lake or drive a little ways to do slightly more strenuous hikes up the mountains nearby. The view atop Bald Face Mountain is worth the climb which is actually very easy most of the way up. If you go on the right day, you can even climb the fire tower there. But back to Nick's Lake...There are plenty of deer, raccoons and black bear so you have to camp smart. It is required that you keep food and cooking stoves in a car or truck over night. Leaving them out WILL bring the bear to you for sure.
This is run by NYS DEC. Staff is friendly and helpful. Camp landscaping and surroundings: Sites are nice...not too close to each other. Soil is kinda sandy and some stones with pine needle blanket in some areas. Lots of shade! Water sites make it easy for canoe owners to keep their canoe right at their "back door". Overall Site Quality: excellent. Good or Bad sites: Best sites for boat owners are the water sites, but the others are very nice too. I do not know of any that are bad. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric. Water faucets near roadway of sites, not too far from any site. Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, semi-private, large and spacious, sandy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fireplaces.
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. Showers metered or free? free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional Comments: Only one shower building, so plan your shower time accordingly!!
Activities and Amenities: lake, swimming, fishing, boating, playground, kids planned activities, pets allowed, dumping station, Canoe rentals from shop in Old Forge who brings them to your site or the launch area. Many people near the campgrounds will sell you firewood. What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, amusements, nature trails, also near Fourth Lake part of the Fulton Chain. Near Enchanted Forest and the Water Safari there. The Forge Hardware store is a must visit place in downtown Old Forge. There is miniature golf in town as well. Lots of gift shops, woodwork shops, etc. A classic Movie theater is in town if you want to take in a movie. Golfers can find good golfing nearby as well. Ski lift rides in the summer make for a great view of the surroundings. Any last comments: Of all the campgrounds I've been at in New York State, this one is at the top of my list!!!
