Web site: Mt. Desert Campground

Somesville, ME - 207-244-3710

Laurie gave us this review on 08/18/07. Dates of Stay: July 2007. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Pop-up Trailer

Overall Campground Rating: excellent.

What stood out? This campground is great if you like quiet beautiful places. The views here are magnificent. Did I mention that it was QUIET? During the day many campers head out of the campground. There is plenty to do within a short drive, bus ride, hike, paddle, or bike ride from MDC. There's no need for planned activities in the campground beacuse of all of the recreational opportunities in and around Acadia Nat'l Park.

Owners and Staff: We did not meet the owners, but the staff people were very helpful and friendly. The staff had seasonal sites near the restrooms.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: This campground is right in the center of Mt. Desert Island and overlooks the northern end of Somes Sound. The landscape is similar to most of the Maine coast (rocky with pine trees!).

Overall Site Quality: excellent

Good sites: We stayed on B6. It overlooked the sound, and was beautiful! Most sites are wooded. Some had wooden tent platforms. Bad sites: There are no bad sites here for tents or pop-ups. This is not a campground for large RVs, trailers, 5th wheels, etc. I think that the max trailer length is 20ft.

Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, Campsite Descriptions: wooded, private, semi-private, grassy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, The waterfront sites are situated high above the highest tide level.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers, There were very few seasonal sites.

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. Coin-metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: $1 for 3 min of hot water...cold showers are free! Restrooms are immaculate.

Activities and Amenities

ocean, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, docks or moorings, ice cream, AM coffee; Crab fishing and kayaking seemed to be the most popular activities in the campground. There's a float dock where you can leave a kayak tied. The Gathering Place sells coffee & pasteries in the morning and ice cream at night. Hours are limited.

What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, ocean or lake, nature trails. It's a short drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia. Also, the Island Explorer Bus stops at the campground.

  1. mad arrived at camp 8am - host gave me map she had marked up then told me of camps sites good for kids (after a 7 hour drive.) Views great, landed at site, unpacked then set up tent and were ready for an adventure when someone came over and told me we had to go to the front office, seems the woman was looking at the map from yesterday. Told us we had to break down tent and move, not wiling to work with us or help us at all, (guy at desk just sort of a jerk about it too) just a get up and move attitude when mistake was theirs. I packed up and moved to another campground. Unless the attitude changes don’t bother staying here - you can get the same beautiful view at much friendlier campgrounds 5 minutes down the road.

  2. oh that is just a shame. I can’t believe they made you move. It is hard enough moving an RV, but a tent! That is a real pain!
