Overall Campground Rating: excellent.
What stood out? It has great sites, with trees between all sites. The new owners have done a great job this year with cleaning up the sites and remodeling the store/restraunt area. Very clean and inviting.
Owners and Staff: You will find that the Tillsons are some of the nicest people you will encounter at any campground! You can tell they are campers themselves!
Camp landscaping and surroundings: Wooded sites on the river, very serene location with a nice island to view the stars from! The road is not used much by vehicles so the kids are safe to ride their bikes and play freely.
Overall Site Quality: excellent
Good/Bad sites: We tent but love site # 26 and are willing to pay the extra as it's a camper site with electricity and water. They had no problem renting it to us even with tents. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, sewer, Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, semi-private, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. Campers were polite and courteous of each other, no complaints about noise nor were we limited to how long we could have a fire or stay up to visit. During the week the campground is extremely quiet and you can let the kids run and play without worry. Many campers who stay there are out during the days 4-wheeling, or rafting and hiking etc... and it makes for a quiet fun place to be with your kids and reconnect. If you are looking for a babysitter and entertainment to occupy your children for you, this is not the place..It is more for a family who wants to spend some time together. It is not like southern maines campgrounds where they feel the need to entertain you every second so that when you get home you need a vacation from your vacation and are broke from all the "activities" ! Moose river has enough fishing, swimming and a playground to satisfy most kids. I think it is the perfect place for kids to get back to being kids. We had about 6 kids between the sites we and friends were on and we never once heard the words I'm bored!
Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers, All seasonal sites were well kept, too often seasonl site areas look like a trailer park, with makeshift porches etc...not at moose river. All were well kept and often had cute flowers growing at their sites. You can tell Moose River is well loved by its campers!
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: The bathrooms need updating however the Tillsons just bought the property and are in the process of redoing the bathrooms. You will not run out of hot water at Moose River, nor will it turn hot/cold/ hot on you. Mr. Tillson is a finish carpenter and I can't wait to see how nice the updated bathrooms are. I have no doubt they will be awesome when he is done. The main store area has been greatly fixed up since they acquired the campground. If it is half as good a job as they did in the store the bathrooms will leave nothing to be desired!
Activities and Amenities
pool, pond, river, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, recreation hall, video games, playground, camp store, ice cream, AM coffee, snack bar, pets allowed, laundry room, dump station. The store is bright and clean, the staff is incredibly friendly. They are starting a small gift store and have great priced t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale to remember your stay. Ice, groceries, candies to full meals are available.
What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, ocean or lake, nature trails. four wheelign, rafting, hiking, swimming, fishing, moose watching, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling, drive to canada or greenville. If you can try to get out to Moose Point Tavern for a meal! Well worth the wait-which can be lengthy!
Last comments: Moose River is just outside of Jackman, if you are visiting Jackman, stay at Moose River. You won't be disappointed! A little birdie told me they are trying to get cabins in...and they are going to be in a prime location by the dam if all goes well. I sure hope it works to get them in and I can guarantee I will be one of the first to rent one!
