dan gave us this review on 08/12/05. Approx Dates of Stay: once a year each august.
Overall Campground Rating: excellent.
What stood out? you get to sleep right on the beach next to the saco river, a perfect location. tons of groups around us go every year too, so after a few years people start looking familiar.
Owners and Staff: nice guys. they do a good job here. always friendly, they don't hassle people over noise or fire size.
Camp landscaping and surroundings: you drive in parallel to the river, and can camp wherever you want. it goes for several miles. we usually canoe downstream halfway from swans falls, camp at night, then keep paddling on the next day.
Overall Site Quality: excellent
Good/Bad sites: no real site numbers, just camp on the beach wherever you choose. reservations not neccessary, theres tons of room here. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, large and spacious, sandy bottom, picnic table, fire ring, not a good choice for kids - no electricity or running water. a great choice for people looking to get away and not be hassled for talking loud.
Clean restrooms and showers? . Restrooms and showers need updating? . showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? . Additional comments on restrooms and showers: no showers, use the river. porta potties cleaned daily, but they can still be a bit rough at times after several hundred people have visited them in the morning. no running water bothers some people, definitely a place for those who like the outdoors.
Activities and Amenities
river, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, they sell wood and ice brought in by atv, and let you burn downed timber. owners always seem friendly, and each year they make improvements. every year our group gets larger, because everyone loves this place.
What is nearby? this is a perfect spot for canoers looking to have a few drinks and enjoy the outdoors. beware if it rains a lot though, becuase one night of hard rain turns the normally calm river into a raging beast. a few years ago it rained 3 inches in the mountains one night, and the beaches were underwater by sunday afternoon. the boat patrol warns you if this is happening, though, so its not that big a deal.
Last comments: this campground defines "getting away." low on amenities, but theres a reason why thousands of people come back every year.
