Cold Spring Campsites (Not to be confused with Cold Springs in Weare, NH)
Andy gave us this review on 07/22/02.
Approx Dates of Stay: July 19/20 2002. Overall Campground Rating: very good. What stood out? Location (on route 3 in Lincoln, about 5 miles from North Woodstock) is great. Small campground, very quiet! Sites on the river are nice and spacious. Reasonable rates! Owners and Staff: The Owner we met, Ben, was very courteous and old-fashioned New Hampshire. Very friendly. Camp landscaping and surroundings: We were joking that they should call it "Ben's backyard" because it's like a big, flat backyard, with the bathrooms being above the garage/office, and a stockade fence running the length of the +/- 3 acre property. The sites run along the fence on both sides, and along the river in the back, with just a couple on the interior lawn. The sites are all ringed with small to medium sized trees and well-tended saplings. The river front has natural brush and grass growing along the bank, except for at a small man-made beach. The beach has imported beach sand, and a dam made from river stones, affording a 3-4 foot stone-bottomed pool for dipping (Bring water shoes.) The garden was well tended and the buildings were in good shape.
Overall Site Quality: very good. Good/Bad site #'s: #19 (our site) was by far my favorite. It's a large corner riverfront tent site with no hookups, about 500 ft from the pump. The other sites along the river (I think there were five or six) were also nice, though I would avoid 17 and 18 as they seemed to be in the path of the beach. Site 16 has a spot for a tent way back almost over the river. Hookup sites are along the fence and while not riverfront, were sunny and close enough to the river to hear the water. Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water. Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, semi-private, large and spacious, grassy bottom, picnic table, fire ring. Some of the sites were much smaller than ours. Would not want to be in the center site though, there was a very old & pretty apple tree growing there. Sites were VERY clean and well maintained. Fire pits are grill-top style. Sites are flat and sand/gravel bottomed in shady areas, grassy in sunny areas. Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers.
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating?
no. metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional
comments on restrooms and showers: Not handicap accessible (set of stairs.) Hot water
off at midnight, on at seven a.m. This is a dark campground at night, bring your flashlight
if you need to use the facilities.
Activities and Amenities: river, swimming, fishing, pets allowed. Next door to
Country Bumpkins (they have a website) campground & camp store. This is a dog friendly
campground - we counted three dogs. The owners just got a dog from the shelter - a funny
old beagle. What is nearby? restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, amusements,
nature trails. On the same road as Clarke's trading post (about 1/2 mile.) About 5 miles
from North Woodstock. Convenient to I-93 and the Kancamagus High way. Last comments:
This is a great, basic, old fashioned roadside camping area. It's perfect for hikers or
adults visiting the area. Though there were kids camping there, there is no playground.
The kids staying there were really good and played mostly at the small riverfront beach.
This is the quietest facility we've ever visited. Made for a restful night. You can hear
the river at night and that's about all. One thing to note: The owner is very relaxed about
reservations, doesn't take credit cards, and seems noncommittal about holding a spot. I
was a little worried, until we arrived. We arrived about ten p.m. in the rain, and he was
up waiting for us. He insists everyone get out of the car to be met. He gave us a really
prime site (actually gave us our pick of sites) and treated us almost like family members
come to visit.
