Casey’s Spencer Bay Camps
Posted on Saturday, August 26, 2006 -- Related Regions: MaineMoosehead-Katahdin

Web site: Casey's Spencer Bay Camps

Greenville, Maine - 207-695-2801

Rick Deschenes gave us this review on 08/26/06. Dates of Stay: Many times from the 80's to late 90's. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Travel Trailer - Size of Camping Unit: Camped in both tents and 25' travel trailer

Overall Campground Rating: very good.

What stood out? The beautiful surroundings. What a wonderful location.

Owners and Staff: Surrounded by Moosehead Lake. Spencer Bay on one side of campground and the lake on the other. Most sites are either on the water or have water view.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: Not much lanscaping to speak of which is the appeal of the camp in my opinion. I went for the natural beauty and returned several times because that is what I found.

Overall Site Quality: very good

Good sites: I like the lakeside sites #1 through #7 but the bay side sites are great if you want to be closer to water level. Bad sites: #14 through #32 are a bit small.

Campsite hookups: Electricity is provided by generator in the morning and evening. While it is not intrusively loud you certainly appreciate the total silence when it is shut down in the evening. Knowing about the limited electricity and the gravity fed water system during the day is not a hardship if you are prepared. The natural beauty of the area certainly makes up for the inconvenience. Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, semi-private, large and spacious, somewhat small, close to the road, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. There is an array of sites. Wooded, sunny, private, open, group sites as well as large and small sites.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: I am sure that there were seasonal campers on my many visits to Casey's but I just didn't notice them.

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. Coin-metered showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: The showers and restrooms are adequate.

Activities and Amenities

lake, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, docks or moorings, camp store, AM coffee, snack bar, pets allowed, dumping station; Casey's is a quiet camp that focuses on the natural beauty of the wilderness setting. If you are looking for a commercialized campground that will babysit your children for the time that you are there, you might want to look for a Yogi Bear Campground. Casey's is all about nature and wilderness.

What is nearby? nature trails. There isn't much nearby, the closest town is Greenville which is a distance away.

Last comments: I have always enjoyed my stay at Casey's and hope to return again to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. I would hate to see the campground turn into a commercial money pit. Casey and Sarah, the owners of the campground are typical Mainers in that they are not overly friendly in a "bubbly" way, Sarah is quiet and reserved and while Casey is a bit "Gruff" I have never found him to be rude but I am not the type that needs to have his bottom kissed.
