Buck Pond (Campground Review)

Posted on July 29, 2009 - New York, Adirondacks Mountains

Onchiota, NY -

L3thatsme gave us this review on 07/29/09. Dates of Stay: July 2009. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? Hybrid Trailer - Size of Camping Unit: 28'

Overall Campground Rating: very good.

What stood out? Peaceful place, off the beaten path, pretty little pond & also a nice lake to Kayak

Camp landscaping and surroundings: Campground situated between Buck Pond & another larger lake (forget the name). Kakaks/canoes on the pond only; motor boats on the larger, although there weren't many for sure. Wooded, private sites.

Overall Site Quality: very good

Good sites: We stayed in site 90. The sites across from us, 91+ were directly on the water and were the prime sites for sure. Bad sites: None that we could see. Best obviously had water.

Campsite hookups: primitive tent, none Campsite Descriptions: wooded, private, large and spacious, sandy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, Most of the sites were shaded from trees but rather large and private.

Cell Phone Service: No cell phone service (verizon).

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: Didn't see ANY seasonal sites.

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? yes. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: Showers were hot & free but the bathroom near our site was pretty old. Floor was grungy, but the shower was great! Other baths appeared newer.

Activities and Amenities

pond, lake, swimming, fishing, boating, Buck pond beach was beautiful. Ducks everywhere who you could feed. A couple actually jumped up on our kayaks. Turtles everywhere. The only thing that we find a little annoying about camping in NY is the fact that there are lifeguards at all the beaches... no tubes in the water, no playing sports on the sand. Pretty restrictive & coming from the "Life free or Die" state, it cramps our space. If you get a spot on the water, you can use tubes & do what you will.

What is nearby? 20 minutes to Saranac Lake.

Last comments: Very peaceful place. Quiet camping for sure.
