Danielle gave us this review on 08/20/07. Dates of Stay: every year. Will You Return? Yes. What did you camp in? other

Overall Campground Rating: excellent.

What stood out? The landscaping and surroundings. The activities. Cleanliness. Everything. I love this campground, there is a very good reason my family has been taking us here every fall since I was 2 years old!

Owners and Staff: They are pretty good with control. This campground has a dominant cabin occupancy, and though it seems easier for kids to party, the rangers still patrol and seem to crack down on those trouble makers. Sometimes can be a little too strict though...went with a few friends a year ago. I think the rangers saw a bunch of teens and 20 somethings and needed to make sure they wouldn't be dealing with trouble so they checked our coolers. Found nothing bad, but it still seemed strange they'd go into our coolers. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Camp landscaping and surroundings: Absolutely gorgeous. Especially in the autumn season. The hills and trees are just breathtaking. There is a small lake with hills along the background as well. Very pretty. The campgrounds themselves, nice. level. Mostly cabins. Fairly nice sized cabins as well. Haven't tried tent camping there yet, but the area is beautiful as well. Very wooded, and from behind many of the cabin sites, you could create your own trail and hike up the mountain/hill, and check out the awesome view.

Overall Site Quality: excellent

Good sites: It's so huge, it's hard to determine what's good and whats bad. I'll share where my family always goes, and have never failed to have a good time...there are two sections, Quaker and Redhouse. I recommend sticking to Redhouse. Many more updated cabins and bathrooms there. Quaker is slowly updating though. Smaller cabins, but nice. Anyway, in redhouse, we like the section called "BeeHunter" or "McIntosh". All the cabins there are great. (Anything 15-27 in Beehunter...awesome) Bad sites: I can't name any BAD sites per say...Quaker and Redhouse are very different. Quaker is very primitive, old fashioned camping style. If there are any cabins, they are probably from the 1950's. But some people like that camping style, so it may be for you. smile

Campsite hookups: primitive tent, electric, water, sewer, cable, Most cabins have fridge, stove, oven, wood burning stove Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, wooded, private, semi-private, large and spacious, somewhat small, close to the road, grassy bottom, pine needle bottom, picnic table, fire ring, group camping area. What I love about these sites is that they can be great for big groups and families when you want to be generally close to each other, and they are just as great when you just have one group for one cabin. Just enough privacy. Great views from all sites too.

Seasonal Campers and Campsites: friendly campers,

Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? yes. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: Quite clean. They use to just have out houses...the traditional wooden wall potty with the moon on the front....sends shivers down my spine just thinking about them....but they updated themselves and got with the times.... smile built some pretty nice bathrooms and showers for all the campers to appreciate.

Activities and Amenities

pool, pond, lake, swimming, fishing, boating, boat rentals, docks or moorings, recreation hall, live entertainment, playground, ice cream, pets allowed, laundry room, dumping station, security gate. I can't remember ALL the good stuff they have to offer because it was always my parents who made the reservations and knew about all the good things. But they do have a lot. They also have a little beach to enjoy as well.

What is nearby? ocean or lake, nature trails. Allegheny State Park is really it's own thing, has all it's activities and everything you should need within the premises of the park. If your looking for something touristy, this isn't the place. It's very outdoorsy and true camping style camping. If you want something more touristy, maybe try something like Letchworth which is kind of close by. Opposite ends.

Last comments: Reserve way ahead. There seems to be always SOMETHING available if you end up reserving last minute, but if you want something specific I advise you to reserve months in advance. I LOVE this campground, if you haven't yet noticed smile but for good reason. So I recommend it.

  1. you could create your own trail and hike up the mountain/hill, and check out the awesome view.

Creating your own trails is wrong. It disturbs many plants and animals. You should always stay on marked trails..

The park is amazing!  I have been there many times, As a kid with my parents, and now as a Parent with my Wife and kids. we have always stayed at Cain Hollow Campground in Quaker, as it’s nice to be primitive and quiet for 1 week each year.
