The owners of Abel Mountain Campground recently contacted us concerning this review. Here are their comments regarding new improvements to the campground:
It unfortunate that this camper had a bad experience; however I feel I need to clarify the circumstances somewhat. This was the last site available on a busy holiday weekend. The specific site has since been widened in the renumbering and overall site changes that were made.
Since we took ownership of the campground, we have focused on projects that needed to be done to improve the campground as a whole. We realize that we cannot meet each and every person’s ideal camping experience, but have made an effort to please as many campers as possible. The final phase of the water and electric upgrade was completed this spring, to now include 20/30/50 amp service at all sites. Cable is now available at many of the sites. A new bridge was constructed in 2004 to connect to a 270 acre piece of land also owned by the Rea family and former home of the Pedros New England Mountain Bike Festival. This bridge connects campers to trails for all abilities…a leisurely walk along the river or an ambitious hike to the top of the mountain. A new trail to the river, where you’ll find a quiet rocky beach and clear, cool swimming holes was added this year. We welcome campers of all types from tenters to large RV’s and offer shady to full-sun sites. We pride ourselves on being a family destination, based on the fact that we have two young children ourselves. We now offer scheduled entertainment and activities on a weekly basis in addition to the existing activities on site, which include swimming, basketball, horseshoes, playgrounds and open lawn space for croquet and other lawn games. A volleyball court and shuffleboard court are also soon to be installed.
I truly hope that this camper will give Abel Mountain Campground another try and suggest calling ahead for a reservation of choice, especially on holiday weekends.

Approx Dates of Stay: 07/02 to 07-05. Overall Campground Rating: fair-average. What stood out? Upon our arrival, we noticed a lot of HUGE RV's lined up in a row. Not a good sign for us as we're pop-up people. Owners and Staff: Staff was helpful. Camp landscaping and surroundings: Not much for landscaping to talk about. Plenty of grass, not many trees.
Overall Site Quality: fair-average. Good/Bad site #'s: The site next to us #86 was probably the best site of them all. Only if you have great neighbors, like us, next to you. That site was along a river. It might not be the best site next year because the road along it will become noisy once the tent sites are added in the back. All of the other sites that were along the river were all taken by big rig seasonals. Problem, they were all in the sun. Campsite hookups: electric, water, sewer, cable, Campsite Descriptions: sunny and open, grassy bottom, picnic table, fire ring, Our site #87 was so small. Once we opened up our pop-up, it took up the width of the site. The staff said that they get 24' trailers in there but smack in the middle of the site is a clump of trees. So we were not happy with the site. We had to put our trailer close to the road. Good thing it was a dead end road. Their description in the Vermont Campground Guide describes the sites as being spacious? Seasonal Campers and Campsites: neat and orderly, friendly campers.
Clean restrooms and showers? yes. Restrooms and showers need updating? no. free showers. Are restrooms accessible from all sites? no. Additional comments on restrooms and showers: Only one bathroom which contained two toilets and two showers (free) for each gender. No electric outlets in restroom. No laundry facility. 2 portable toilets, one at each end of the campground. That's it, but if you're in an RV it's not really an issue.
Activities and Amenities: pool, playground, kids planned activities, pets allowed, dumping station, Not your typical pool. Was difficult for adults to get out of it as the sides were sloped and very slippery. They only sell wood and ice. Two playgrounds. What is nearby? grocery stores, nature trails. The owner bought the mountain behind the campground and made quite a few trails. Last comments: Not the campground for us. More for people with big RV's. After talking with the couple next to us, we found out that they jacked up the prices during the season. They had made reservations in May with a set price but only to find out that the price was increased. We decided to check out another campground in the same area, Lake Champagne, and found that to be the same set up. Mostly large RV's and lots of seasonals packed in a row. A few sites of note: C-25, C-5 to C-7 for pop-ups. The rest are great for RV's.
