Winter Camping! Yahoooo!

Well, we did it. We did what I have always thought other campers were crazy for doing! We went winter camping this weekend, and it was actually pretty good. I am sitting here in the TV room at Danforth Bay campground writing this entry! This is the life, huh?

While I was looking forward to going this weekend, I was worried about two problems. First our little parakeet bird. I was worried he was going to catch a draft and become sick. So far, the trailer stays pretty warm. We use an oil filled radiator heater and it works wonderfully! Last night I did wake up feeling very cold in the middle of the night, but we moved the heater more towards us and it warmed up.

The other situation I was concerned about was internal moisure/condensation on the windows and doors. So far so good. It could be that the air outside isn’t as moist as in the autumn months, or that we didn’t take showers, or cook in the trailer.  But there does seem to be slight drafts coming from the windows, so on our next trip, Mike plans on wrapping the windows for extra insulation.

This was probably the best weekend (weather-wise) we could have picked for our first winter campout. It was sunny, 40° and awesome! We stayed in site B22 Cochuora Circle; it was a short walk to the heated bathhouse. Showers were hot and pretty long for a mere quarter.

We walked for hours today - all around the campground. There were snowmobile paths all over and a lot of the roads were plowed. It was surreal to see so many familiar campsites left totally unrecognizable, surrounded by bare trees, and mounds of snow. It was a different experience than in the summer months. And Danforth has the nicest most caring staff and I always feel at home here!

I don’t know if our experience would have been this positive if we stayed somewhere else! It was a great time and a nice way to beat the winter blues when you miss camping so much! This mini-trip did us a world of good and the fact that we were actually “camping” is a bonus!
