Sanitation for Holding Tanks

Yes, this is such an icky subject, but I was thinking about it over our weekend away. To keep our black water holding tanks fresh and in good working order, we use TST Dry granular tank treatment. It works very well, and is so easy to use. The bottle has a special spout that helps measure the precise amount.

We definitely won’t use any unsafe formaldehyde products, and while some of the other non-formaldehyde products are environmentally friendly, some are not very effective. But the TST Max Granular has really been the best. It is safe and really keeps the tank fresh. Just make sure that when flushing, use plenty of water!

  1. Sounds good! Where can I find this product? Do they sell it in normal RV stores or is it something special that you have to order?

My meter on my black tank does not work and I have a feeling that it might be from what I’m using.

  2. Yep, we have found it where ever and when ever we needed a new bottle. Wal-mart, K-mart, RV stores, I believe they all sell it. It has a spearmint/wintergreen smell to it...not that it is pleasant to talk about, but....

oh and those meters never seem to be very accurate. If there is a piece of tp hanging around, then it could offset the gauge.

And speaking of TP, we used to only use the special (more expensive) RV/Marine TP, but now we just use the Scott’s brand (one ply) 1000 sheet rolls. A marine/boat service tech informed my sister that you can test the dissolve speed yourself. It the paper dissolves quickly and easily under water in the sink, then that is fine. He recommended the Scott’s brand for marine use.
