While camping at the Riverbend Campground inLeeds, Maine, we did a fair amount of driving to the nearby towns to
find restaurants for lunch and/or dinner. There was one place inparticular that we liked enough for a second visit. Leone’s in Monmouth,Maine is located next to the Monmouth Police station on Main Street.
It looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside, but this placeis hopping with regular diners. There is a small area to sit and eat, but I think most of their business is take-out. The food is good, theyoffer mostly sandwiches and subs (and breakfast too) but the desserts are what we came back a second time for.
Homemade cookies (approx 5 inches in diameter) and wonderful homemadepies & cakes fly out of the store before they have time to cool down.Mike found the large Jiffy cookies irresistible, while I loved thechocolate cake with peanut butter frosting.
Leone’s in Monmouth, Maine gets an A for their excellent desserts and great service!
EDIT: I was informed that there was a fire in September (2006) that destroyed Leone’s and the building. Here is the news article:

The comments on the article are very interesting, and one brings up an interesting point. The building was located next to the police department, why did it take so long to realize there was a fire to begin with? And where are the smoke alarms? I feel bad for the owners. We visited in summer 2006, and they were in the process of selling the business.
