New England Waterfalls Book Review

Last summer, while viewing the beautiful Silver Cascade waterfall in Crawford Notch (Rt 302), we were recommended the book New England Waterfalls-A Guide to More than 200 Cascades & Waterfalls. It was on my wish list, so Mike gave me the book for Christmas this year.
The book is not a pocket guide, but it’s not too large in size either. It has 292 pages, so there is a lot of information. It is definitely worth the purchase price of $12.21 at Amazon.
Book Review
The Introduction chapter explains what the book is all about and how it is organized. There is a nice section on the different types of waterfall, with illustrations and text descriptions. A section on how to photograph waterfalls is also very informative, although a bit outdated. They highly recommend SLR cameras for photographing waterfalls, but today’s digital cameras offer many manual settings that rival the film SLR camera.
The book is divided by six New England states: Conn, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Although the photos in the book are black and white, they show good detail. (Note: not all 200 waterfall sites include a photo.)
At the beginning of each State chapter, there is a map with numbered locators for each waterfall. This way you can gauge which falls are located together for multiple viewings in one day trip.
Each waterfall listing includes a quick summary: waterfall Type, Height, Trail Length, Water Source, Altitude, Difficulty, Hiking Time, DeLorme Map coordinates, and Rating. A more detailed description is listed next along with trail information, directions and nearby waterfalls.
Other Books:
If waterfalls in other Northeast regions interests you, take a look at 200 Waterfalls in Central & Western New York or 200 Falls in Maryland, New Jersey, & Pennsylvania.
Each book is roughly $12 at Amazon.
