It’s BBQ Time!

Our neighbor recently purchased the Weber Baby Q Grill and she loves it. Compact, easy to tote (approx 30 lbs), easy to clean, excellent quality. Uses a stainless burner and cast iron grate so it cooks evenly and is built to last! It uses the small cylinder propane tanks but you can use an adapter hose to hook up to a larger propane tank or your trailer tanks. For a portable grill, it still has a good sized cooking surface. She was cooking for herself and 3 kids, and it was perfect.
I also imagine the larger (original) Weber Q Grill is a good choice as well. Still portable at approx 45 lbs. it has a larger cooking surface, and the side flip out tables are convenient. I don’t think you can go wrong buying a Weber product!
All season, we have been thinking about purchasing a Baby Q grill for ourselves, but we decided we should wait maybe a year or two, since we have a perfectly wonderful grill: Char-Broil Patio Caddie. It is tall and thin, and easy to take on our longer camping trips. It is approximately 50 lbs; we throw it in the back of our truck. Smaller 10 pound propane tank, sturdy and well built. We use it at our home as well. We have had this grill for just over 3 years and it’s still in excellent shape. Cooks evenly and the cooking surface will fit four chicken breasts or eight burgers. It is a perfect full-time grill for a family of 2 to 4 people.
Does anyone else have any other grills to recommend??? I know the Thermos Grill-2-Go is a popular choice among campers, but I have read dis-satisfied comments about it on some forums. Then there is the Coleman Road Trip grill. This grill seems to have many happy customers. There are some campers that are satisfied with their small cheap Walmart/Sunbeam brand portable grills for $20. Mike found they didn’t cook evenly, but some campers swear by them.
And don’t forget charcoal! Mike wanted to get into cooking with carcoal last summer after reading the awesome “How To BBQ” book, so we purchased an Aussie Walkabout carcoal grill. It folds up and neatly stores in the back of our truck. But Mike decided that carcoal was too time-consuming, so we are back on the propane side!
Ooh, and although it doesn’t qualify for “true” BBQ, doesn’t everyone have at least one George Foreman electric grill. Yep, this has to be the greatest grill of all time! Small enough to take with you anywhere, and easy to clean if you know what to do. At first we found this grill to be irritating to clean. I tried cleaning it warm, cold, etc but it just didn’t seem worth the effort. I finally learned inserting a wet paper towel inside the closed grill right after use helps tremendously. Keep the grill surface wet and it will be a lot easier to clean. We have never taken this grill camping with us, but I know our inlaws do, and they really like it. Someday, we will take it on a trip for a proper workout.
And that, my friends, is my take on BBQ’ing on the road. Please leave your comments on your BBQ recommendations!
