Appalachian Campsites Receives $205,000 Fine

Posted on February 26, 2009 by That's Camping - Travel Plans

A fellow camper emailed me the link to this article:

Appalachian Campsites in Pennsylvania receives huge fine

The fine was imposed due to 136 illegal septic hookups. Even though they are taking reservations for this season, the campground appears to be abandoned. If anyone has reservations at Appalachian Campsites in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania you better think twice. They could be taking your reservation and deposit with no intention of opening the campground!

  1. OMG!!! I just read the article regarding the fine that Appalachain Campground received. We camped this past weekend there (Memorial Day - 2009). I was looking for a web site to write a review about this campground. We had reservations last year to stay there but, the campground called and cancelled them stating that they were hooking up to the city sewer system. After reading the article and camping there, I would say there is STILL MAJOR SEWER PROBLEMS. We had a full hook-up site. When we were readying to leave, we drained our black water then the grey water only to have it, black and grey water, overflow all over the ground near our feet. DISGUSTING. Overall this campground is gong downhill fast. We stayed there in 2006 and I thought it needed some TLC then. I can’t see that anything has been done to upgrade. Infact, it’s deteriorating terribly. What a shame because it is so close to Cabela’s.

  2. Yuck, that sounds so gross.

It’s a shame that so many campgrounds just can’t keep up with the cost. And then it just gets over their heads, and it’s impossible to keep up with the repairs.

And with the bad economy, it’s even worse for these places.

    Thanks for your update, Michelle!
