Another Danforth Bay Weekend

Well one more Danforth Bay weekend has come and gone. This will be our last visit until July, when we will stay for the week.

Chocura Circle

We stayed up in the Chocura Circle area. It was very hot, and I wished we stayed in the Lovell/upper Main St area instead. There is such a lovely lake breeze in the area up there.

There were lots of big rig buses staying in the inner circle (Providence Place) but it was still very quiet and peaceful.

Dining Out

Friday night, we brought dinner back with us from Kranky Franky's and also dessert...Mike had the ice cream from out back, and I had the magnificent carrot cake (no Pie Guy pies) They have been remodeling and will be offering pizza and calzones soon. It should be a great change.

Saturday for lunch, we christened our new Baby-Q grill and it cooked our burgers perfectly. Mike loves the grill!

Saturday night, we went to another favorite restaurant, the Pizza Barn. I love that I can order my own small pizza and get the toppings I love, while Mike can order the toppings he loves. FYI, garlic and mushroom pizza is my weakness!

For dessert, we stopped at the Danforth Bay snack bar, which is now open til 9pm on weekend nights. I tried the fried cheesecake, which was recommended to us by Dena at the front office. THANKS DENA! It was delicious. Sort of a cross between an eggroll, fried dough, and cheesecake. Mike (of course) ordered ice cream.

Our Long Walk

We took a long long walk (probably 2 hours total) and ended up walking through the sand pit and up into a bit of the future campground (for 55+ seasonals). It is amazing how much work goes into planning and constructing a new campground from scratch.

Meeting Friends

We stopped by the pool area on our walk back to our site, and we found New England Camper and his family. Unfortunately, I was unable to catch up with his daughter who was going to share her art sketches with me. I hope she wasn't too disappointed, but I am hoping there will be another chance! smile

We also stopped by the Flintstones season spot to say hello. It was nice to see them and talk about food and camping!

Relaxing

By Saturday night, I was zonked and ready to just relax, so we sat in the trailer, plugged in the iPod and played Canasta. In fact, we did a lot of relaxing this weekend. I took a quick nap late Saturday morning, and was in my jammies til about 11:30. What a bum! Mike vegged in the sun outside.

One Little Complaint

I do have one complaint and I hate to say anything negative because it really is our favorite campground of all time. We look forward to our trips, and will continue to do so.

I noticed it was extra dusty on the roads. I noticed it on our last visits but it seemed worse this weekend. There was a constant thin haze of dust in the Chocura/Providence section of the campground due to the main road running along side this section.

By the time the weekend was over, we had a thick layer of dust on our truck, and I had to constantly keep wiping down our dining table in the trailer because the dust was coming in through our large kitchen window.

I also noticed the dusty haze floating over the sites at lower Main Street, by the Pavilion. I don't remember Danforth having this dusty problem any other years, and I mentioned something at check-out, but the woman at the desk said she didn't notice and blamed it on being very dry this week. But I noticed this problem on our last two visits as well, and as we all know, it was non-stop rainy during the last month. Yes, I do think the problem was escalated due to the extra dryness this week, but this is definitely something new this season.

I am wondering if the dust is due to all the construction vehicles driving in and out of the campground (while they are constructing the new campground). But I really don't know how bad the problem could be in mid-summer if it is a hot and dry summer.

But complaints aside, we did have fun. And if anyone from Danforth Bay is reading this, please forgive my complaints. I do love you guys! Big thanks to Dawn and Dena for being so nice!

  1. I have yet to stay at Danforth and called yesterday to see if they had something open for a 32’ fifth wheel.  All they had was M1-M2 and M3 and A13, A22 and A24.  From everything I’ve read, this looks like a great campground and I’d love to try it, but after reading this note about the dust at Chocura, I’m very nervous about booking.

It looks like the A’s are pretty far away from everything….any advice would be soooo welcome!

    Thanks!!

  2. Hello Ellen!
    I am glad you commented!

The A sites are pull-through sites that are wide open and sunny, but a close together. You will have neighbors on each side of you. The A section is actually very close to the office/depot/pool areas. There is a steep hill to walk down Providence and another steep hill to walk up Main street to the depot area. But yes it is far to the lake area…but we love to walk and bike so where ever we stay we are happy. smile

As for the M section, I would pick those sites over A sites. Yes, the M area is far away from activities, but that is the beauty of it. You will be on the outskirts of the campground with peace and quiet.

If I remember correctly, M3 is one of the two sites right on the edge of the ballfield, but the ballfield is large, and not utilized regularly, so I don’t imagine it would be a huge problem. I am pretty sure the site is wooded, but with an opening in the trees to view the ballfield. But again, I am going on memory, so I might be a little off.

M1 and M2 appear to be on their own little side road…and again, I don’t recall the specifics, but I am sure they are both nice. If it were me, I would pick the M area over A. We have never stayed on A, we prefer the B sites that are on the outside of the circle.

Anyway, I hope you decide to give the campground a shot. It really is amazing.

And check out our discussion forum, we would love to hear your thoughts on any of our conversations! We even have a couple of active polls.

  3. Hi!

We are fairly new to the camping experience. My parents retired and purchased a 35 ft RV to get away and travel during the winter months. They offered to let us borrow it for our summer vacation. Not knowing where to go, I searched the Internet and I read so many positive reviews on Danforth Bay that I could not help but to make reservations for a week in July. I booked one of the full hook up sites on the water, site C11. Are those nice sites or should I have booked in the more secluded area?

Any information that you can provide would be helpful.

    Thanks!

  4. Welcome to the world of camping, Tracy! smile

The sites in that section are open, grassy, and I think sunny, and a little bit close together. They are all in a row with no real separation in between.

BUT before you panic and cancel your reservations, keep in mind you have a gorgeous view of the lake with a wonderful lake breeze. You are steps away from the beach, bathhouse and kid’s crafty activities.

The fire pits are right near the edge of the hillside by the lake, so you can have a fire by the lovely lake at night.

I have some photos of our site way back in 2002 when we stayed at the end site #C10, right next to yours.

I will post photos in a separate article on the site, so you can see a little bit clearer what the sites look like.

  6. Thanks for posting the pictures. You gave me a better understanding of what the sites look like. They are a little crowded, but it is on the water. I am willing to see how I like it.

We have a yellow lab and I have a feeling that he is going to enjoy this vacation as much as we are. I can’t wait until July.

oh and I forgot to ask before, but which week are you going? We will be there July 9 to 16.

  8. We will be there that same week! I hope the weather cooperates for the both us. It does not look like the type of campground where you will get bored. Lots to do!

  9. I was wondering if you were going that week too! We have a big family camp-out that week every year! I will have to stop by and say hello! That is if you are not out and about having fun all week!!! hehee

  10. Hey That’s Camping….I just wanted to put in my two cents on the dust. Are you sure it was dust? We have had an UNBELIEVABLE few weeks of pollen. The car is covered in just a few hours. Anything left out has a very thin layer of pollen when you got to pick it up. We kayaked several times the last two weekends and the entire bay is covered with a thin coat. Hopefully it will clear up soon.

I’m not sure if we’ll be there the week that you’re there but if we are I’m sure we’ll see you.

  11. Hello Janice (and David & Farley)!!!!

As for the pollen, oh yes, that stuff was brutal here at home!!! Thankfully the rain took most of it away! I don’t remember it being this bad in past years as this season for the pollen dust!

But the problem we experienced was defintely dust. It was brown dirt, not green…and when anyone drove down the main road you could see a ‘fog’ of dust floating in. I actually spoke with someone affiliated with the new construction team, and he agreed that it was dust…but they are working on a solution. So, I don’t think it will be a problem for long! smile

I hope we see you sometime this summer, if not in July, then Labor Day or Columbus Day weekends perhaps!!!
